Going Crazy for Flowers

During the summer wearing flowers just seems appropriate.  I love flower jewelry and over the years I have made quite a few flower fringe bracelets for summer fun!  

 Recently I decided that wearing flowers on your wrist just wasn't  enough so I came up with the idea of making a fringe flower centerpiece to wear as a necklace.   Instead of making a beaded necklace to finish off the centerpiece,  I decided to add  Sari silk.  The shades of pink in this necklace are just luscious and it will definitely be a summer favorite.  Can't you just picture this with a white cotton shirt or t-shirt this summer?  I certainly can.

Waxed Linen Blog Hop

First a big Thank You to Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio LLC for hosting this blog hop.  I usually shy away from doing blog hops because I always feel like what I design is never going to be good enough or measure up to the designs of the other designers in the hop. When Diana  suggested a blog hop using waxed linen I decided to bite the bullet, overcome my fears and join in.  I really needed something to spark my creative juices and I definitely needed more practice with waxed linen

I usually shy away from doing blog hops because I always feel like what I design is never going to be good enough or measure up to the designs of the other designers in the hop. When Diana  suggested a blog hop using waxed linen I decided to bite the bullet, overcome my fears and join in.  I really needed something to spark my creative juices and I definitely needed more practice with waxed linen.  

My only experience with waxed linen up to this point had been a few simple knotted bracelets strung on waxed linen and a necklace that I made 7 or 8 years ago following a tutorial written by Stephanie Sersich found in a beading magazine.  With a little help from my son I got some basic macrame knots down.  
This first piece is the Stephanie Sersich piece that I had totally forgotten about until I started taking pics for this blog hop.  I've always admired earrings with the waxed linen fringe and I made two pairs for this hop.  Next I had some sea glass that I thought would be perfect for a summer necklace with waxed linen in various shade of blues and beige (reminds me of sand and sea).  I'm still undecided on the focal for this piece but I had a large piece of undrilled sea glass that I stumbled upon while looking for the drilled sea glass.      Well that in itself created a challenge because I had no idea how I was going to turn this into a focal.  I pulled out some silver wire that I had, found a You Tube video and gave wire wrapping a go.  On the plus side this piece is long enough that it can double as a wrap bracelet as well.  

 The last piece was a last minute piece using a tutorial I found online.  I'm not sure that the weigh of my waxed linen was sufficient for this piece as I don't feel like I got enough weight in my knots but for my first try I'm happy (and since ripping out knots in this waxed linen is next to impossible).

Do Over Challenge


Jeannie Dukic  of JKDJewelry is sponsoring a Do Over challenge. The challenge was to take an "old, tired, boring" piece of jewelry that Jeannie had made in her early days of jewelry making and to recreate a piece of jewelry using the same beads.  Additional beads from our own stash could be added but we were to use at least 50% of the do over piece.  

Here is the piece that I received from Jeannie.  There were earrings also but I forgot to photograph them before I started using the beads.







I made two necklaces from the beads in the original necklace.  The first one is a combination of two different purple amethyst beads using the moonstones as a break between the purple.  The spiky nature of the one amethyst bead mimics the uneven look of the moonstone from the original necklace.   I also used the chain and closure from the original necklace in this piece.  









The second necklace is a simple little necklace using red millefiori squares with navy and yellow accent beads.  Again I used the moonstone chips to separate the other beads in the piece. The donut beads were added to this piece for a bit of whimsy.  With the additional donut beads I created a matching pair of earrings.
