Whoops Blog Hop

Ordering beads on the internet can be tricky.  At least for me it is.  I have difficulty visualizing mm sizes when I order beads and I've ordered beads that when I got them they were so tiny I was floored (no misrepresentation was involved in the seller - it was me and my inability to visual the size). I've also ordered beads that were much larger than I anticipated.  Well recently Cynthia Machata of Antiquity Travelers had one of those moments.  Cynthia ordered some grey pearls for a project and when she received them, they were ahem lets just say a lot larger than she anticipated.

Cynthia used the pearls in her project and because of the size, was left with an over abundance of these beautiful pearls.  Cynthia decided to have a blog hop and send out six of these pearls to six people willing to play around with these beauties for a blog hop, count me in.  Now I have no business signing up for any blog hop at this time of the year and I've been scrambling as I'm sure everyone else has been with their busy schedules.  I came up with an idea awhile back for these gorgeous pearls but as I'm prone to do, I waited until almost the last minute to execute.  I actually thought the hop was last weekend - the same weekend as my jewelry open house.  Scrambling around, I put together the focal for my piece.

Awhile back I was rooting around in my stash and I found some sterling silver wire that I forgot I had.  I also discovered some sterling silver squiggles that I bought some years back that I also forgot about.  I made a structure for my piece with the heavy gauge sterling wire, wire wrapped the pearls and added them to the structure.  My first attempt wasn't working out as I had planned - the pearls and squiggles were too close together and didn't stay put on my structure.   Also stashed away in my stash of beads, tools and long forgotten gems was a coiling gizmo.  I used some of the thin gauge wire that I discovered in my stash and made some short coils to use as spacers between the pearls and squiggles.

I am pretty pleased with the finished focal however I'm still unsure as to how I want to finish off the necklace.  Having an extra week for the reveal allowed me to order some soft grey seam binding that I thought I would use but I'm not sure that's what I want to do.  I'm also toying with using some black leather for the back portion but of course I don't have black leather to use so my project in incomplete.

Big thanks to Cynthia for allowing me to participate and please check out these other participants to see what they came up with for the hop.

Art Jewelry Collective

Melinda Orr, Cynthia Machata and myself have been talking about putting together an Artisan Jewelry Collective for fellow jewelry artisans.  It is hoped that this collective will enable us to gain more visibility in the community as a group rather than individuals.  This project is still in the planning stages and there is a lot of great things planned, a separate website, catalogs durings holiday seasons and more.  In the meantime, with the holidays fast approaching, a Holiday Shopping Guide WIDGET has been created by  Melinda Orr to help us gain visibility during this holiday shopping time.  In order to participate, the Art Jewelry Collective WIDGET must be added to your sidebar or as a blog post on your blog.  For details on how to be included and how to add this WIDGET visit the Creative Bead Chat website.

Bead Chat Magazine

Creative Bead Chat is a free online magazine created by members of the Creative Bead Chat Facebook group. This magazine is published quarterly and features some of the best designers in our community. Along with a great deal of eye candy, the magazine provides top notch tutorials and articles on various techniques, tools and artists. As part of the editorial team for this magazine, I provide tutorials, video links and input on artists, articles and themes that will be featured. In my opinion, this online magazine is one of the best in the beading community and I'm honored to be a part of it. What a surprise this month when one of my pieces was featured in the magazine.

My necklace features an awesome polymer focal from Staci Louise Originals and leather from Melinda Orr of Orrtec Designs.  The focal and leather were gifted to me by Melinda Orr at Bead Fest this year and I hand knotted some large hole jade beads on waxed linen, added some copper chain and I ended up with what I think is a pretty awesome piece.

If you haven't checked out this great magazine, you can do so by clicking this link Creative Bead Chat Magazine. Hope you visit and enjoy all the articles and all the design by our featured artists as much as I do.

Autumn Jewelry Inspiration

Recently a call out for jewelry designed with a fall or halloween theme was placed by  Ema Kilroy of Ema K Designs.  Having several items in my stash that fit this category I provided some pics of one my halloween themed bracelets.  This fringe bracelet is a jumble of beads using your traditional black and orange - flowers, stars, rounds and more and a happy jack-o-lantern button for a closure.
Halloween Theme Bracelet

I am pleased that my bracelet was selected as one used in Ema's blog post over on the Craftsy.com website.  If you haven't visited the Craftsy website before, you should check it out.  It is loaded with tons of  inspiration, patterns and projects for various crafts to include jewelry making.

Please take a peek at the other Autumn and Halloween inspired designs over on Craftsy!

Anchors Away Challenge

Since I accidentally deleted my pictures for the blog hop on my ipad while on vacation,   I decided that I would add a second blog post to show you the pic.  After seeing all the great designs from the other participants,  I was a little embarrassed to show mine but I didn't want you to think that I really didn't do my earrings.

As I mentioned in my previous post I loved these anchors and went to Suburban Girl Studio's etsy shop to pick up a pair so that I could participate in the challenge.  Time got away from me and I delayed making my piece until the day before I left on vacation.  I had won a kit with the same focal at Bead Fest along with yellow waxed linen, navy and white seed beads.  I decided to use them in my earrings and put together a hasty design with fringe and the cute focals.  Hopefully I have learned my lesson and in the future I get started sooner so that more thought can be put into my piece.

Beading with Friends: Beadweaving with Lentil Beads

Beading with friends is always more fun than beading alone.  Recently I had the great fortune of going to Bead Fest in Philadelphia and meeting up with two of my good friends from our facebook group, Creative Bead Chat.  It had been a year since we had been able to see each other in person and shopping and beading with Cynthia Machata and Melinda Orr was the highlight of my trip.

During the shopping portion of our trip, we discovered a vendor that carried some outstanding beading patterns.  Recently I had begun to play around with seed beads again and particularly the new two hole beads that are very popular right now.  A certain pattern by Bead Dreamers called Lentille using two hole lentil beads caught our eye and we decided to give the pattern a try. Getting started with this pattern was a little tricky but once the first two rows were completed, it was a snap to make.

Each of us had a different take on the pattern.  Mine are both monochromatic while Cynthia's is an elegant piece using two colors with an extra special flower clasp.  You can see Cynthia's bracelet on her blog, Antiquity Travelers.   Melinda's bracelet is still in progress but she also utilized two colors.  My clasp is a knock off of the "M" clasp that I handcrafted out of copper
wire.

It really is fun to bead with friends even if it sometime is only thru the internet sharing pictures back and forth in messages.

Anchors Aweigh Blog Hop

Toltec Jewels is sponsoring another blog hop using some really cute anchor components from Suburban Girl Studios.   I have been really inactive in the blog hop scene this year and I decided that this would be a good chance for me to rev up my creative juices and join in.  Well.... let me tell you, there probably is a good reason why I don't do more blog hops - time crunch.  I postponed using my components  until the last minute as I was getting ready for vacation (actually I should be sitting on the beach in sunny Florida as you are reading this).    I debated about just not participating but decided against doing that - there is just something about saying you are going to do something and then not following through that bothers me.  So between packing the car and checking off all of those last minute items on my list, I made a pair of earrings.  I really wanted to get more creative and I did actually do some searching for something I could make in a short time frame using nautical knots with rope or with seed beads but panic set in an I copped out for simple.  Funny thing is that I won an anchor component identical to this from Diana's bead swap at Bead Fest this year and some of the ingredients in my gift came in handle in this last minute effort.  I used the yellow waxed linen and the navy and white seed beads from the kit to do a simple fringe earring.

(Well I went into my post to update the participants list and accidentally deleted my photo on my iPad --  photo is on laptop at home and can't readd.  So much for trying to do this on time). Funny thing I didn't resave the post but lost picture anyway.   Please visit the other participants sites for a look at their creative designs:

Choosy Chicks Love Chicklets Blog Hop Reveal

When I saw the blog hop that Rita of of Toltec Jewels organized using these cute chicklet beads from SueBeads I was disappointed that I had not seen it earlier and I missed the cut.

Sue Beads Chicklets

I had seen a previous blog hop using these beads and I thought they were just the cutest little beads.  I was disappointed that I missed out on the original cut for signing up for this hop.

I really wanted to try these little beads so I hopped over to Sue's Etsy shop and picked up a couple of chicklets for myself.  Rita so graciously let me join into the hop.

It's been awhile since I've done some basic bead stringing and as I pulled out my wire and my crimp beads I was a little stuck as to how I was going to use my chicklets.  A bracelet was definitely going to be my choice but how to accomplish that and give the chicklets the respect they were due was a dilemna. My original idea was to use some super duos that I had in a denim color but I couldn't get them to work correctly on my wire.  Next I went to my bead stash of sodalite beads - I love blue lapis and sodalite and have a fair amount of beads in those colors.  My chickets were a light gray blue that I ended up pairing with several different shapes of sodalite, sterling silver and gray seed beads for a multi strand bracelet.  Simple but sweet!  Thanks to Rita and Sue for  this great blog hop!

Needle, Thread and Beads

Pyramid Beads with Copper Clasp
It's been awhile since I've done any beadwork but lately I've been on a bead weaving kick. I just discovered some of the  new beads on the market and they have inspired me to try my hand at some designs using these beads.   Normally, I would not classify myself as a seed beader,  I always considered a lot of the bead work a little too fussy for my taste so I stayed away from it for the most part. Lately though I've given it another try.   I'm trying new beads, new techniques (at least for me) and new types of endings for my pieces.  Here's a sampling of my latest:
Peyote Wave with Leather Ending
Herringbone Stitch with Leather Snap Closure
Herringbone Stitch with Super Duos and a  O Bead Fringe and Leather Button

Peyote Wave Bracelet with Super Duos and Leather Ending

Waxed Linen - I think I'm Hooked

Waxed Linen Stack

A few years ago I discovered the term "arm party" - well doesn't that just sound like fun!  There is a trend that has been going on for a very long time of stacking or layering your jewelry.  In my travels to South Carolina and Georgia over the past 10 - 12 years while my children were in college I used to admire the ability of those Southern Belles to stack many bracelets on one wrist - most of the time they were gold charm bracelets and gold chains of various styles.    Never finding the right mix of chains to suit my taste, I just could never quite pull that off.  So when I saw a blog post about "arm parties" a few years back,  I was intrigued by the way gals were wearing not one, two, or three bracelets at a time, but four, five or six bracelets.  All styles of bracelets were being stacked.  Well, my daughter has a sense for fashion, actually she graduated from college with a degree in fashion design, and has always had the ability to layer bracelets together.  Mom not being quite as hip had to struggle with this stacking idea but I sure gave it a try.  During my following of these "arm parties" on various blogs across the internet I stumbled upon an arm party blog hop  hosted by Tracy Statler of Make Bracelets, using your own jewelry creations.  Well I definitely was going to participate in that one and my daughter and I began to stack them on.  I guess the rule to good arm stacking is to mix mediums - some beads, some leather, some chain, some fiber - you get my drift.

After participating in the waxed linen blog hop last week I got the itch to try some more designs with waxed linen.  What better way to try different designs than to try layering several together.  I had a day where I just wanted to make something but didn't want to pull out all my beads and supplies - easy solution, waxed linen thread and a few beads.   I pulled out some gorgeous natural colored waxed linen that I purchased from White Clover Kiln on Etsy and a few beads that I had in my stash and started creating.  The first bracelet I did was a simple flower design that I found on Beadaholique's website.  I modified it to the beads I had on hand.  The second bracelet is a braided wrap bracelet that was found on a blog post on  I Always Pick the Thimble.  After finishing these two bracelets I was going to make a third waxed linen piece but I found a bracelet that I already had in my collection using similar beads to the flower style that I had made using a tutorial picked up from The Gossiping Goddess's blog.  I was so happy with how these turned out, simple but fun.  I think I may have to make some more "stacks".   For more inspiration on stacked bracelets and waxed linen, you might want to check out Erin Siegel's blog.  She is the waxed linen queen and has many inspirational tutorials and ideas on her site. You can find my post on stacked and layered here and a peek at my "arm party" blog post here.   Keep in mind that some of these arm party stacks in that last post are maybe a little overboard, but a 20 year old wrist can pull off just about anything.     Inspiration for some of these bracelets was found on Erin's blog as well.  Enjoy - I know I sure did.

Going Crazy for Flowers

During the summer wearing flowers just seems appropriate.  I love flower jewelry and over the years I have made quite a few flower fringe bracelets for summer fun!

Recently I decided that wearing flowers on your wrist just wasn't  enough so I came up with the idea of making a fringe flower centerpiece to wear as a necklace.   Instead of making a beaded necklace to finish off the centerpiece,  I decided to add  Sari silk.  The shades of pink in this necklace are just luscious and it will definitely be a summer favorite.  Can't you just picture this with a white cotton shirt or t-shirt this summer?  I certainly can.

Waxed Linen Blog Hop

First a big Thank You to Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio LLC for hosting this blog hop.  I usually shy away from doing blog hops because I always feel like what I design is never going to be good enough or measure up to the designs of the other designers in the hop. When Diana  suggested a blog hop using waxed linen I decided to bite the bullet, overcome my fears and join in.  I really needed something to spark my creative juices and I definitely needed more practice with waxed linen

NECKLACE MADE WITH TUTORIAL BY STEPHANIE SERSICH
I usually shy away from doing blog hops because I always feel like what I design is never going to be good enough or measure up to the designs of the other designers in the hop. When Diana  suggested a blog hop using waxed linen I decided to bite the bullet, overcome my fears and join in.  I really needed something to spark my creative juices and I definitely needed more practice with waxed linen.

My only experience with waxed linen up to this point had been a few simple knotted bracelets strung on waxed linen and a necklace that I made 7 or 8 years ago following a tutorial written by Stephanie Sersich found in a beading magazine.  With a little help from my son I got some basic macrame knots down.

This first piece is the Stephanie Sersich piece that I had totally forgotten about until I started taking pics for this blog hop.  I've always admired earrings with the waxed linen fringe and I made two pairs for this hop.  Next I had some sea glass that I thought would be perfect for a summer necklace with waxed linen in various shade of blues and beige (reminds me of sand and sea).  I'm still undecided on the focal for this piece but I had a large piece of undrilled sea glass that I stumbled upon while looking for the drilled sea glass.      Well that in itself created a challenge because I had no idea how I was going to turn this into a focal.  I pulled out some silver wire that I had, found a You Tube video and gave wire wrapping a go.  On the plus side this piece is long enough that it can double as a wrap bracelet as well.

The last piece was a last minute piece using a tutorial I found online.  I'm not sure that the weigh of my waxed linen was sufficient for this piece as I don't feel like I got enough weight in my knots but for my first try I'm happy (and since ripping out knots in this waxed linen is next to impossible).
